The Canterbury :: Canterbury Tales Knights Essays
The Canterbury As April comes, the narrator begins a pilgrimage to Canterbury from the Tabard Inn at Southwerk. Twenty-nine people make the pilgrimage toward Canterbury and the narrator describes them in turn. The pilgrims are listed in relative order of status, thus the first character is the Knight. Chaucer describes the knight as a worthy man who had fought in the Crusades. With him is a Squire, the son of the Knight and a 'lusty bachelor' of twenty. The Knight has a second servant, a Yeoman. There is also a Prioress, shy and polite. She is prim and proper, sympathetic and well-mannered. The Prioress wears a broach with the inscription "All things are subject unto love." With the Prioress is her secretary (the Second Nun) and a Monk. The monk is a robust and masculine man who loves to hunt. The Friar, Hubert, is an immoral man more concerned with making profit than converting men from sin. The Merchant from Flanders is a pompous man who speaks endlessly on how profits may be increased. He seems grave, yet there is no better man, according to the narrator. The Clerk follows the Merchant. As an Oxford student without employment, he is impoverished and wears threadbare clothes. The Man of Law is a man who deserves to be held in awe. He knows the law to the letter and gives the impression that he is far busier than he actually is. A Franklin travels with him. He is a man who lives in comfort and is interested simply in pleasure, particularly culinary delight. There are also five guildsmen: a Weaver, a Dyer, a Carpenter, a Tapestry-maker and a Haberdasher. With them they bring a Cook. A Shipman is the next traveler, who comes from the port of Dartmouth, and with him a Physician. The Wife of Bath is next; she is a weaver who wears bright red clothing. She has been married five times (and had several companions as a youth). The Parson is an honorable, decent man who cares for his congregation and adheres to the teachings of Christ. With him is his brother, a Plowman, who is equal ly kind. The final travelers are a Miller, a Manciple, a Reeve, a Summoner and a Pardoner. The Miller is a large man with an imposing physique. The Manciple is from a lawyers' college and knows every legal maneuver. The Reeve is a slender man with a fiery temper.

Impact of Technology on Mankind and the Natural World Essay
Humans have impacted this world greatly with the increase of technological advances. For the most part, though these things have been helpful in creating a Global Community, the impact of this rush of technology has been negative. The fast-paced industry of technology is of the mindset of â€Å"faster, better, more efficient.†This betterment of the current technology has left a lot of waste in its path. Old computers and cell phones have little use anymore and are hard to recycle. Although there has been a huge negative impact there also have been some great positives that have helped in bring the world closer together. In respect to Transportation, we have made more progress in the last ten years than we have in the last century. We have quickly set up huge diversity in the market of transportation; now it is possible to travel father than ever before. With this ease of travel, trade and tourism booms and has to created links around the world leading to co-operative programs like the United Nations, the Red Cross and co-operative space programs. These kinds of connections would not be possible without the growing communications trade that has risen up in the last thirty years. With television many are able to access news broadcasts from around the world, getting exposure to the variety of cultures around the world. Unfortunately less than 30% of the world’s population has this advantage. Although, it can also be argued that it’s not much of an advantage the way the Western World uses it, most teens by the time they graduate will have watched over 15,000 hours of television; a waste of valuable time most would say. However, with the array of communications technology we have, knowledge is becoming more accessible. Information is available at the click of a button; facts on a new topic take only a search on Google. With the invention of internet, a new variety of voices are being heard. Sharing opinions and ideas with someone on the other side of the world costs little to nothing and has served to spread different cultures. On the other hand, because of this western has begun to dominate the world. Through movies and Hollywood, the population is mimicking the North American way of life. Even with all these advantages, the gap between the rich and the poor countries is increasing due to their lack of access to these advances in technology. North American consumerism is responsible for keeping them that way. Our desire for cheaper clothing of good quality has caused the best land of Indonesia and China to be planted with the crops needed to make these products; instead of planting food to feed their starving population. With scientific advances we are able to prevent their crops from insects, disease and drought. We can now create genetically modified corn that will provide the necessary nutrients that will allow children to fight off disease that normally would kill them because they just don’t have the immune system to fight it. But instead we sell it to the highest bidder, make a profit and never think twice about how much our new Nike shirt really cost. Overall, man’s technological inventiveness has brought about half the world closer together. Physically, the distances are no longer unimaginable and communication is easier and cheaper but this technology has not been used to bring all the countries equality, or at least helped the poorest countries to have reasonable living conditions. Instead our small percentage of the world’s populations consumes the majority of the world’s resources. If this is advancement, then my definition must be horribly wrong. Somewhere along the line we lost all idea of equality within countries. If we’re not inventing new ways to make the world better, aren’t we just making it worse? We are destroying our ozone with pollution, leaving marks on the moon, causing cancer and turning our planet into one big oven. It doesn’t sound much like improvement; these inventions can be used to better the world, but collectively we [being the next generation] have got to take the first step.

The Economic Inequality Of Australia - 1861 Words
Australia, although being a multicultural country where everyone is equal, there is a severe presence of economic inequality. With millions of people living poverty, Australia’s wealthy continue to accumulate wealth, whereas the poor continue to become poorer. With the economic inequality in Australia rising, the Australian government is contributing to this by creating new policies within the budget, making those who are disadvantaged already worse off. Rather than creating policies that make the wealthy even wealthier, the government should be reducing the burden on those who actually have substantial burdens already. The government is aware that there are ways in which they can reduce the economic inequality in Australia, however with†¦show more content†¦This means that those who are already well off, are getting advances that make them wealthier and those who are struggling are only getting small advances that determine whether they can put food on the table and provide for their families. An example of a struggling Australian dealing with the economic inequality posed against him is Duncan Storrar. Storrar appeared on a popular political show on the ABC, QA and posed a question to the panel. â€Å"I have a disability and limited education. I ve been a low income earner my whole life and as such I pay a larger percentage of my income in taxes than the average Australian. Lifting my tax free threshold would change mine and my children’s life. How come rich people get a lift in their threshold? It means nothing to them but to me it would mean my kids hear something else apart from ‘sorry girls, daddy is broke’†(Storrar, 2016). Duncan is just one example of how he economic inequality in Australia affects its citizens. The government of Australia highly impacts the economic inequality in Australia with doing things such as bringing in polices and aiming the budget at certain demographics. After the highly anticipated budget release of 2016, the government told Australians of the major budget measures that were going to affect them. This included a raise of the tax bracket for middle income earners, redefining it as $87,000 rather than the current $80,000. Currently, the bracket is for those who earn $37,001 - $80,000. â€Å"Tax

Cyberpunk is a neutral connotation of accelerationism situated between the left and right wings. Like a perpendicular spike with equal magnitude that juts from the tangential line that connects the forward progress of technological advancements. A warning. Accelerationism in itself is divided, the same coin with radically different faces. The left, which aims at moving away from capitalism and its hindering effects which hold back true unbridled technological growth and the right which, on the other hand, aims at advancing the technological state to increase capital, consumerism and the spectacle as outlined by the situationists. Notre Dame De Paris, Ill De la Cite (1163-1345) The building that has taken my interest is Notre Dame De Paris, which literally meaner â€Å"Our Lady of Paris†in French. When one thinks of Gothic architecture, majority will think of Notre Dame as it is one the most significant French catholic cathedral that is distinctively Gothic. Because Notre Dame has seen many reconstruction in its days, its early construction in the period sass is characterized as Early Gothic and adopt similar pointed arch that transcends from late Romanesque. However, the cathedral’s great bells were still preserved and was used as a warehouse to store food. Victor’s Hugo novel, â€Å"The Hunchback of Notre Dame†in 1831 has drawn a huge attention to the dilapidated state of the cathedral and probably has instigated the restoration project in 1845. Notre Dame too was first of its kind to utilize the flying buttress in which to support the thin exterior walls. It is built around the choir and nave to withstand the stress fracture that begins to happen as the thin wall pushes outward. Other architectural advancement that precedes here is the ribbed vaults that can be found above the double aisle surrounding the choir. Other features that embody the Gothic style are the rose windows that brings in magnificent natural lighting to the interior. More over there are many diverse characteristics that can help us to identify a Gothic structure such as gee archways, ornately crafted spires and lace like tracery, serve to hide the bulk of the load bearing 3. Since all works of religious art goes beyond the artistic expression, these Gothic features accentuates the lightness and grandeur of spiritual space. Most are focused ‘upwards’, perhaps in reference of Heaven or presence of higher heavenly being. Then a man with a white jacket came out and said softly but assuring Im so sorry about your lost, shes going to be in a better place right now but we are going to be moving her out shortly. I suddenly couldnt breathe. I only could think of the worse that my family member is on that other side of the door, and I hadnt had a chance to say goodbye. But then they turned around, I felt their pain and sorrow as I have been there a many of times before, but they were not familiar, they werent my family.I walked past them and penned the door. There she was In a gloomy but calm mood, my grandma. She had motioned me to come near, as she had always done before. I finally let out a breath of that I had been holding in for quite some time. My grandma held me close and said Dont worry about me; I have cancer but my faith is way too strong in the Lord to give up now. As I heard her say these very few words, I only could smile because I knew she was a fighter and she does not give up under any circumstance. As a few hours had passed we talked and talked and Just enjoyed each others company, as a Emily should.Time was winding down, and it was now time for me to leave and I kissed her goodbye and I left the hospital. For the next few months I had watched her get weaker physically but stronger spiritually. She had lost her hair but never did she lose her pride. After 8 months the cancer had cleared. She had regained her hair back and It was even longer and thicker as I could remember.
